The story of Mavrud is deeply rooted in Bulgarian folklore, adding a mystical allure to this already exceptional grape. During the reign of Khan Krum in the 9th century, a strict ban was placed on the cultivation of vineyards to prevent people from becoming drunk and neglecting their duties. One day, a ferocious lion escaped and began terrorizing the local villagers. A brave young man named Mavrud, known for his strength and courage, managed to kill the lion and save the village.
When Khan Krum asked Mavrud about the source of his bravery, Mavrud revealed that his mother had secretly planted a vine and made wine from its grapes, which gave him the courage and strength to face the lion. Impressed by the story and the young man’s valor, Khan Krum lifted the ban on vineyards and ordered that the vine be named Mavrud, in honor of the hero. This tale of bravery and resilience lives on in every bottle of Mavrud wine, adding a touch of legend to its rich and bold character.
